Protect Yourself from Social Security Scams

Attention! Scammers are now pretending to be government employees, using scare tactics to trick you into giving them personal information and money. They may threaten you, your family or demand immediate payment to avoid arrest or other legal action.
Don’t be fooled! If you receive a suspicious call, you should:
- Hang up.
- NEVER give them money or personal information.
- Report the scam at oig.ssa.gov.
What to look out for:
- A call or email stating there is a problem with your social security number or account.
- Requests to pay a fine or debt with retail gift cards, wire transfers, pre-paid debit cards, internet currency, or by mailing cash.
- Callers threatening you with arrest or other legal action.
- They may look official, but do not trust caller ID or letterhead over what the purpose of the correspondence is.
Social Security may call you in some situations but will never:
- Threaten you.
- Suspend your social security number.
- Demand immediate payment.
- Require payment by cash, gift card, pre-paid debit card, or wire transfer.
